The Blurb On The Back:

One happy couple.
Two divided families.
A wedding party to die for.

On the private island of Castello Fiore - surrounded by the glittering waters of Lake Garda - the illustrious Heywood family gather for a wedding to remember.

But as the ceremony begins, a blood-curdling scream brings the celebrations to a violent halt.

With the guests trapped on the island as they await the police, old secrets come to light and family rivalries threaten to explode.

Everyone is desperate to know …

Who is the killer?

And can they be found before they strike again?

Despite having studied journalism at university with the intention of becoming a journalist, Robyn Whitford is currently working in a bar in London. On the plus side that’s where she met her partner, Toby Heywood, the youngest son of the very wealthy Heywood family who wants to set up his own restaurant. Unfortunately Toby’s ambition doesn’t sit well with his older brother Laurence or mother Margot who want him to join the family business - Heywood Capital Management - and who pressure him to do so at every opportunity.

Laurence is engaged to wellness influencer Eva Bianchi and they are due to get married on the private island of Castello Firore on Lake Garda in Italy. It’s an exclusive affair - friends and family only. Along with Robyn,Toby and Margot are Jeremy Lambourne (Laurence’s hatchet man at Heywood Capital), Stephen Dalton (Laurence’s best friend from their schooldays at Rushworth and best man) and his very pregnant wife Abigail, Chadwick Grant and Miles Allen (who are also Laurence’s friends from Rushworth and also the groomsmen). Eva’s family are also attending (mum and dad Vito and Paola and her younger sister Dina) as well as two friends who are serving as bridesmaids. Finally, there’s Eva’s agent Harper Bale and Cam Nolan who is taking photographs of the wedding and the happy couple for London Living. But there are secrets within both families and tensions build up as the guests gather for the wedding. Then, on the day itself there’s a blood curdling scream and a body is found on the beach.

Forced to wait several hours for the police to arrive, the guests know that due to the difficulty in accessing the island, the killer must be one of them and fearful that whoever it is may well strike again …

Tom Hindle’s standalone murder mystery is an entertaining take on locked room mysteries set amongst the haves, the almost haves and the wanna haves in a glamorous location. I enjoyed how Hindle builds in backstory for the various characters but with such a large cast, there are inevitably some caricatures and unfortunately I guessed the killer and their motivation a little too early for the book to be wholly successful for me.

I picked this up because I enjoyed Hindle’s previous books - A FATAL CROSSING and THE MURDER GAME. I think he’s a clever writer and does a good job of mixing classes and wealth in his plots in a way that holds the interest.

This book is mainly told from Robyn’s point of view but Hindle brings in others - Vito, Harper, Stephen, Leo (one of the bride’s guests) and Sofia (the manager of the wedding venue) - to bring in back story and keep the action moving. Robyn works pretty well as a viewpoint character - I believed in her disillusionment with journalism as a career and her support for Toby and her observations on his family but there are times when she is a bit naive about what is going on around her and I wanted more interaction between her and Eva, especially given the dramatic nature of a scene between them. Stephen similarly has a lot of backstory and like Robyn was not born into money but worked his way into it, which means he has more perspective on Laurence and the Heywood family. However his relationship with his wife Abigail is very two dimensional (not least because Abigail is under-developed) and his role in a key backstory doesn’t convince. The other viewpoint characters are all there to serve plot and so are little more than sketches.

Hindle confidently keeps the action moving and the slow unveiling of secrets on the part of both the bride and the groom works well and keeps you guessing. However there are a lot of sub plots going on in the book and one involving the Mafia again was just a stretch of credibility that went too far for me (in this case specifically because of the nature of their involvement). I’d also say that Hindle deliberately hides who the victim is for a good chunk of the book, which didn’t work for me because it is pretty obvious who the victim is and then has the secondary issue that because of the way that character is portrayed, not only is there not a lot of shock about it but there’s also not a big sense of loss for it.

My biggest issue though was that I guessed the killer far too early and I also had a good idea of their motivation, which kinda spoiled the ending for me and meant that I didn’t fully enjoy the book as much as I thought I would.

None of this is to say that I didn’t enjoy the book because I did. Hindle has a good sense of pacing and does know how to work with timings and maintain a sense of tension. Certainly there was nothing here that would make me not want to check out his next book and I think this is just one of those reads that didn’t hit my buttons.

The Verdict:

Tom Hindle’s standalone murder mystery is an entertaining take on locked room mysteries set amongst the haves, the almost haves and the wanna haves in a glamorous location. I enjoyed how Hindle builds in backstory for the various characters but with such a large cast, there are inevitably some caricatures and unfortunately I guessed the killer and their motivation a little too early for the book to be wholly successful for me.
